What determines it's value...
The value of a precious metal is obviously dependent on two things: it's purity and weight. In the U.S., gold purity is designated by "karat," 24kt being the purest and most valuable.
Unfortunately, 24kt is much too soft, making it unsuitable for jewelry making. To make it stronger and more durable, other metals such as copper, silver, nickel, and zinc are added.
Unfortunately, the addition of these added metals dilutes the actual gold content, decreasing it's value.
